About Us

The Community Climate Council is a youth-founded, not-for-profit organization advocating for local climate action through enhancing climate literacy and political advocacy in Peel Region, Ontario.

Our Mission

The Community Climate Council is a youth-founded, not-for-profit organization advocating for local climate action through enhancing climate literacy and political advocacy in Peel Region, Ontario.

We were founded on the desire to create a platform for our community members to call for bold local climate action and policy change while also working to develop our own community-led solutions. It is because of this focus that our entire approach is now community-centred and solutions-oriented.

Our organization is entirely volunteer-run, funded through community donations, and inclusive of all ages.

Our Story

Five young women, coming from diverse lived experiences, were inspired by an opportunity from Youth Challenge International to spark climate action in their municipality. Little did they know, this would mark the start of a nonprofit climate organization. United by a shared drive to make a lasting impact, they brought diverse perspectives and backgrounds to the table.

It was this shared commitment to local climate action and policy change that laid the foundation for what would soon become the Community Climate Council (CCC)—a platform where community members could call for bold action, advocate for policy reform, and develop innovative, grassroots solutions. From the very start, CCC was designed to be community-centered and solutions-oriented.

2019: The Beginning

In our first year, we hit the ground running, driven by our mission to amplify the voices of those most affected by climate change and provide tangible, action-oriented solutions. Here’s what we accomplished:
• 1st place at the Climate Action Catalyst Summit
• Made history in organizing Peel Region’s first ever climate strike based in Brampton
• Delegated at City Council in support of Peel Region’s first Climate Change Master Plan
• Co-hosted International Women’s Day events
• Launched programs like Climate Cafés, the Climate Library, and our first podcast
• Kept education alive through webinars, zines, book clubs, and workshops, even in the face of the pandemic
From the very beginning, it was clear: our focus on community empowerment, youth engagement, and education would set the tone for all our future work.

Launch Year:
A Strong Start

When the pandemic hit, we quickly pivoted to online engagement, refusing to let the challenges of the moment halt our progress. We hosted the first-ever Cyber Climate Café, which allowed us to continue tackling pressing environmental issues like Highway 413, sustainable fashion, and environmental justice. We also launched youth debates, Earth Week actions, and community clean-ups. These efforts helped us remain deeply connected to our community, even from a distance, and proved that adaptability and creativity are key in times of uncertainty.

Adapting to Change

As CCC continued to grow, so did our role as a trusted voice for climate action in Peel. We:
• Led Climate Cafés and joined Ecojustice Canada’s Rally 4 Climate
• Featured in Mississauga’s public outdoor exhibition
• Connected with thousands through rallies, presentations, and advocacy

These moments helped solidify our presence as a grassroots movement, bridging the gap between local communities and policy change.

Growing our Voices

By 2023, our efforts reached even more people:
• Empowered youth at the Green Career Fair
• Launched a quarterly newsletter to stay connected with our community
• Ran major events for Earth Day, tree planting, and Greenbelt conservation efforts
• Brought fresh energy to our mission with in-person Climate Cafés and public panels

We remained committed to inclusivity, bringing people of all ages and backgrounds into the conversation about climate action.

Expanding Reach

In 2024, our efforts were recognized when we were honored with the #ClimateChange Award from the City of Brampton. We also expanded our initiatives:
• Launched a Climate Hub at the Ecobuzz Conference
• Rolled out the Youth Climate Corps campaign to further engage young people in environmental leadership
• Advocated on key local environmental issues, including incinerators and infrastructure projects
Our impact continues to grow as we empower the next generation of environmental leaders and remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainable solutions. We believe that together, we can create lasting change in our communities and beyond.

2024 and Beyond

Our Three Pillars

Climate Literacy

We are working with community organizations and non-profits to educate, inform, and empower our communities to understand not only the reality of the climate crisis but of the immediate actions our elected leaders and communities need to take.

Through our social media and digital climate library, we will be sharing credible sources on all things climate.

Political Advocacy

The Community Climate Council is comprised of empowered residents who are passionate about using effective policy and legislation to take local action on climate change.

We delegate at city council meetings, meet with local elected officials, and promote opportunities for youth to get involved with city plans or policies.

Community Engagement

Community is at the center of why we do what we do. Our community is a powerful vehicle for creating change at a local level.

Through our work, we provide educational events, resources, and engagement opportunities for community members.

We work to ensure all of these opportunities are respectful, inclusive, and accessible. The CCC itself is composed of community members and this platform was created to welcome as many concerned residents or allies as possible.
